Beginning in 1941, the Czech fortress town of Terezin was used by the Nazi Gestapo as a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp. Theresienstadt, the German name for the ghetto, was filled with horror, grief, and pain.
However, there were groups of Jews who resisted if only in their souls and their artwork, and they left a legacy that has now been found.
“Light in Terezin” is the story of Dr. Lisa Peschel and the journey that uncovered “Laugh With Us,” an original cabaret performed only in Theresienstadt in 1944. The story follows Dr. Peschel back to the Czech Republic and back to the ghetto where the performance originally took place. The film is currently available on iTunes and Amazon and screens on PBS stations beginning April 1, 2015. A book of the same name has been published, and it follows the events of creating the film. It too can be purchased on Amazon.
